Hot Tub Moving Tips: How to Prepare for Your Spa Move
Preparing ahead of time can make your hot tub move faster, safer, and less expensive. Before moving day, there are a few important things you can do to make sure your spa is ready and the access is clear for our crew.
Drain the Hot Tub Before Moving Day
Your hot tub should be completely drained before our crew arrives. There are three common ways to drain a spa:
1. Use the Built-In Drain
The simplest method is to open or twist off the hot tub’s built-in drain and allow the water to flow out naturally. The downside is that all of the water will drain into the area immediately around the spa. Because hot tub water contains chemicals, it may damage grass, plants, or landscaping.
This method works best when the hot tub is on concrete and there is an appropriate drain nearby.
2. Connect a Garden Hose
Most hot tub drains are designed to accept a standard garden hose. Connecting a hose allows you to direct the water away from the hot tub and toward a suitable drainage area instead of letting it collect around the spa.
Using either the built-in drain or a garden hose will typically take around 4 hours, depending on the size of the hot tub.
3. Use a Submersible Water Pump
The fastest option is usually a submersible water pump. The pump is placed inside the hot tub and connected to a discharge hose so the water can be directed to an appropriate drainage area.
With a good submersible pump, many hot tubs can be drained in under 1 hour.

Whenever possible, we recommend having the spa completely drained before our crew arrives so we can begin the move right away.
Measure the Hot Tub and Access Areas
Accurate measurements are extremely important when planning a hot tub move. Measure the length, width, and height of the spa, then check the narrowest and lowest points along the path at both locations.
Be sure to measure gates, side yards, doorways, overhangs, and other tight areas. Exact measurements help us choose the right equipment and reduce the chance of delays, price changes, or having to reschedule the move.
If you are buying a pre-owned spa from a private seller, make sure to ask how the spa was originally brought into the property. Was it brought in on a spa dolly through the side yard or back gate? Or was it craned over the house or lifted over a wall?
If it was brought in by dolly, find out whether anything has since been added that could obstruct the path, such as plants, statues, fencing, or home renovations.
Disconnect Power
Most 120V hot tubs plug directly into a standard wall outlet, while 240V spas are typically hardwired into a breaker or disconnect box.
You may also hear these called 110V/220V or 115V/230V. They generally refer to the same household electrical systems; 120V/240V is the current terminology.
If your spa is hardwired and you need help disconnecting it, we offer this service for an additional $75. Please do not attempt to disconnect a hardwired spa yourself unless you are experienced working with electrical breakers, as improper handling can cause electrical shock, a short circuit, or serious injury.
Clear the Path Before Moving Day
Make sure the pathway from the hot tub to the street or driveway is clear before our crew arrives. Move patio furniture, planters, hoses, toys, decorations, and other loose items that could block access or create a tripping hazard.
If there are gates, stairs, narrow side yards, slopes, or other obstacles, send us photos ahead of time so we can plan the move and bring the right equipment.
